Reflection #3

Daisy Lamoureux, Content from October 16th

– Graphics in education

What?

In this week’s lesson on October 16th we learnt about the benefits of graphics in education. Multimedia is a great tool to get across your message in a clear way and make your lesson more engaging and appealing to the learner. We took a look at the science behind the way we perceive information and the proven benefits of visuals when presenting concepts, looking into intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load.

So what?

I found this lesson to be very relevant, informative, and useful as a future educator and student still. We discussed many of the different uses for Powerpoint, a site I previously never considered, and the tools it has to utilise as an educator. I think it is super important to have multiple ways to display your teachings and engage your students as in one classroom we have many different kinds of learners, this includes images, videos, illustrations, sounds etc.

We also touched on creating your own media to display which stood out to me as it is important to model what you are expecting of your students, this adds to your classroom community and connection. The use of multimedia is most beneficial when done with intention, to engage and explain without being overwhelming.

One of my biggest takeaways was relearning how to take a screenshot on my MacBook, as I have already utilized that skill multiple times since for my blog!

Now what?

The best way to learn and process new information is to practice it, so I tried out a few of the new skills we learnt in our lecture.

Making a worksheet with Powerpoint!

Playing around with making Word Clouds!
